QUESTION 1: WHAT LED YOU DOWN THE PATH OF PURSUING PRIVATE PRACTICE?
I moved to Australia in 2013 after a successful career in the NHS. I returned to Uni in 2015 to study my favourite subject of Nutrition & Dietetics. I knew I wouldn’t be moving from our new home in The Sunshine Coast as hubby had secured a rare GP job on the coast. I also knew it was highly unlikely that there would be any new grad jobs on the coast. My heart has always been in primary care so I always knew I would end up in Private Practice.
QUESTION 2: DESCRIBE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY HAS BEEN LIKE GETTING TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW
Lets just say I have done a complete 360 from my reason to go to Uni and where I am now ! I started Uni believing Pete Evans was the answer to the world’s woes…. I know right ! Over time I began to see the error in my ways, however it wasn’t until Fiona Willer gave a talk to us at Uni and my post grad training in Eating Disorders did I see the damage his messaging could cause. It was reading Intuitive Eating written by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch that really consolidated and helped my thinking in how best I could serve my clients. I now love what I do helping clients free themselves from all of the fad diets, food rules & body shaming etc….
QUESTION 3: WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS NAME?
It’s a combination of an abbreviation of The Sunshine Coast where I am lucky enough to live but also a representation of the warmth that our clients can expect from myself and my colleague Jo.
QUESTION 4: WHAT 3 BUSINESS TOOLS OR RESOURCES COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
I couldn’t live without my colleagues and their wisdom, help and support.
Clinical System – currently using Halaxy ( not the best but not the worst). Email- makes communicating between Jo and I easy and quick.
QUESTION 5: IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD OUTSOURCE IN YOUR BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD THAT MEAN TO YOU?
Advertising – whilst Jo is learning all things Facebook Advertising it would be great if that was done by someone else.
QUESTION 6: WHO IS IN YOUR CHEER SQUAD CURRENTLY?
Jo Hall my business partner, my hubby, my four kids, my mum and dad and my fab friends.
QUESTION 7: DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS PLAN? IF SO, HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT CREATING IT AND HOW DID YOU FIND THE PROCESS? IF NOT, WHAT’S STOPPING YOU FROM PLANNING OUT THE DIRECTION YOU WANT YOUR BUSINESS TO GO IN?
Yes we do have a business plan with qtrly reviews or sooner if necessary. It was given to us by our business mentor and is essential in helping you focus on the direction you are taking.
QUESTION 8: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACE IN BUSINESS RIGHT NOW?
Advertising and getting our brand known and respected.
QUESTION 9: DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON HOW TO ACHIEVE THE WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
Jo and I decided from the outset that we both wanted to work part-time so we have combined our skills and time to create a full-time job between us. The danger being self-employed is that you never switch off but as Jo and I have experienced this in the past we have made a decision not to go down this path. We also use hours tracker as a way of checking that we are not spending more time on work than sleep or life. Yoga twice a week helps lots too !!
QUESTION 10: WHO DO YOU ASPIRE TO BE LIKE AND WHY?
I don’t aspire to be like anyone else, I simply strive to be a wiser version of myself each day .
QUESTION 11: CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WEEK IN BUSINESS FOR YOU?
Mondays are devoted to CPD
Tuesdays are marketing days and patient admin.
Wednesdays & Thursdays are consulting days.
Fridays are yoga and coffee catch ups with friends.
