QUESTION 1: What led you down the path of pursuing private practice?
I had taken time off working for a few years, I had my fourth baby so life was busy enough at home with the kids. Then an opportunity came up for me to start a private practice in a local GP surgery, it is not an area that I had ever felt driven to enter but private practice offered more flexibility which was going to work well with young children so decided to give it a go. I started Live Well Dietetics 3 years ago and I love it, I enjoy the flexibility, variety in my practice and the directions it has taken me that I wasn’t expecting.
QUESTION 2: DESCRIBE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY HAS BEEN LIKE GETTING TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW
A roller coaster! There are definitely ups and downs when establishing your private practice. There are times when I wonder what I am doing and other times that I am excited about the journey. I have learnt a lot and had to stretch myself out of my comfort zone, and that is what I love – that I am always learning and growing.
QUESTION 3: WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS NAME?
My husband actually came up with it, “live well” seemed to encompass what I want to achieve for people, I want them to have a healthy relationship with food avoid fads and confusion of food, and enjoy what they are eating… and it wasn’t taken so many other ideas were already someone’s name!
QUESTION 4: WHAT 3 BUSINESS TOOLS OR RESOURCES COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
fast pay – my eftpos system
My practice software – coreplus
These allow me to have what I need wherever I am
QUESTION 5: IF THERE WAS ONE THING YOU COULD OUTSOURCE IN YOUR BUSINESS, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD THAT MEAN TO YOU?
If there was one thing you could outsource in your business, what would it be and what would that mean to you?
Marketing, it is essential and takes up alot of time and thought. If I could outsource marketing it would allow my business to grow without taking time from my work and family.
QUESTION 6: Who is in your cheer squad currently?
Definitely my husband and four kids!
QUESTION 7: What’s the biggest challenge you face in business right now?
People cancelling appointments or not showing up, even when reminders are sent!
QUESTION 8: Do you have any tips on how to achieve the work-life balance?
My biggest tip for this is to not answer your mobile phone during non work hours! I have had people calling at all hours or messaging at 11 pm on a Sunday night. If you don’t have boundaries it can easily take over your life, stress you out and cause burn out.
